How To Turn Your Garden Into Something You’ll Actually Use

November 6th, 2013 by Andreas Xavier in Garden. Topics: , , , ,

Too many people it seems treat their gardens as something nice to look at and not much else. Many of us are guilty of designing our gardens to look nice, but not be terribly practical, and then we’ll often spend a lot more time looking at them through our sliding patio doors than we actually spend out in them.

But when you think of how much space your garden takes up, it becomes apparent just how wasteful this is. This is a big open space that’s probably bigger than any of your rooms. It has completely unique advantages over the rest of your property and spending time in it is good for you even. So why don’t people spend more time in their gardens and less sitting on the couch?

Often it comes down to a lack of inspiration: we simply don’t know what to do in our gardens or how to make the most of them. If that describes you then, it’s time to start looking at the kinds of changes and purchases that can help you to make more from the space and to really take full advantage of your property as a result.

Great Purchases for Your Garden

To start with, there are many great purchases that can help you to get more out of your garden. One is a water feature. Water features can make a huge impact in any garden, not only adding an interesting visual feature to look at, but also changing the lighting and providing a tranquil and relaxing sound to help put you at ease as well. You’ll find it transforms the whole space and makes it feel much more idyllic.

Another great purchase for your garden is a windbreaker. This can help to turn your garden into less of a wind tunnel and you’ll find that it stays much tidier as a result and creates much less work for you.

In terms of getting more use out of your garden, getting a sheltered area and some heaters can help you to enjoy your garden in any weather. Keep this on your patio by the door and add a table and chair and you’ll find it’s a great place to come outside to read. Seating around the rest of the garden can make a big difference too – by providing deck chairs or garden pillows you can make your garden more suited to relaxing during the day or having parties. Pop up shelters are an ideal way to cheaply and easily add a covered area to your garden that can be taken down or moved when necessary.

There are plenty of toys and gadgets that will help you make more use of your garden too. For instance swing ball can provide a great workout and is lots of fun for kids too, as is a trampoline.

Installations and Changes

Of course if you’re willing to go a little further and spend some more money, then there are some even more fundamental changes that will help you take your garden further still. For instance, if you often work from home then an office podcan provide you with an area to get away from it all and get to work. Children love playgrounds, while all ages will get a kick out of a swimming pool or a hot tub which are also great for improving your health. If you want to turn your garden into a home spa, then you can also add an infrared sauna.

With a greenhouse or popup greenhouse you can start growing your own vegetables and enjoying a new hobby, while a treehouse is again great for the kids but can also provide an alternative place to relax that will look very bohemian in your garden.

The point is, that a garden doesn’t just have to be a nice collection of plants and a lawn – if you invest in some cool gadgets or are willing to do a little work, then you can turn it into a space you actually want to use and start making more of your property as a result.
