How to Save Money Heating Your Home

January 5th, 2014 by Andreas Xavier in Energy. Topics:

Keeping your home warm in winter is essential, but it doesn’t have to cost you the earth. Homeowners are forever looking for new ways to save money heating their homes. Making some simple adjustments to your heating system will save you money on your energy bills.

Service your radiators and air conditioning system on a regular basis

If your heating system is not working properly, or has a leak, you won’t be able to use it efficiently. A professional plumber will be able to diagnose any problems and carry out the necessary repairs as needed.

Install a thermostat

According to Claddagh Oil you can save up to 10 per cent on your heating bills by just turning your thermostat back 10 degrees Celsius for 8 hours a day. Programmable thermostats allow you to set the temperature of your home in winter.  As these devices can be adjusted automatically, you won’t need to worry about making any changes to them.

 Increase insulation

Insulating your home acts as a blanket by keeping it cool in the summer months and warm in the winter. When you insulate your loft, you will prevent hot air from escaping, thus reducing your energy expenditures.

Change the curtains in winter

In the summer months, your curtains may be nets that are light in weight. But in the colder months of the year, it is best to change them to thicker and heavier ones. This way, you will keep the warmth in, and prevent cold air from entering through your windows.

Shut the windows and doors

While you may keep your doors or windows open in the summer to let fresh air in, you may not want the cold air in the winter, or the heat escaping. Make sure your family doesn’t leave the doors or windows open as this will reflect badly on your energy bills. In the event that your window seals have cracked, or have gaps around them, you can stop the uncomfortable draught from entering your property. Your local DIY shop will have sealants that you can use to cover these gaps or broken seals around your windows.

Seal the loft access door

Even if you have already insulated your loft, warm air may still escape through the access door. Use glue to attach insulation to the loft door as well as a latch bolt system to shut the door tight.

Radiator maintenance

Homeowners should get CORGI registered contractors to service their central heating systems on a yearly basis. This will ensure your units operating perfectly. If you have an old boiler, consider replacing it with an energy-efficient one to save money.

Condensing boilers

One of the best types of boilers is a condensing one, as it reduces energy bills and operates at 75 per cent efficiency. By installing this type of boiler in your home, you can be rest assured that your utility bills will be significantly lower than the year before.

There are in fact, three types of boilers to choose from: Combi, Regular, and System boiler. Combi boiler heats water on demand but it is not as energy-efficient as the other two. The regular type of boiler works with a hot water tank. This is usually installed in the loft. The system boiler eliminates the need for placing a water tank in the loft as it has an expansion vessel.

Whichever you choose, your CORGI registered engineer will install it in your home. An energy-saving boiler is an important investment for your home so make sure you seek the advice of a trustworthy and reputable engineer.
