Lower Energy Bills Start with Home Heating Systems

March 16th, 2014 by Andreas Xavier in Uncategorized. Topics:

Energy conservation is a topic of interest to more and more earth-conscious individuals chipping in to do their parts for the planet.  Sustainability issues continue to gain momentum as projections look forward at the planet’s population and future resources, highlighting shortfalls in the natural energy sources we count on.  The reality for future generations points to scarce energy sources and insufficient levels of fundamental fossil fuels.  In short, without modifications toward more responsible energy use, the future of earth’s inhabitants looks very different than the bountiful landscape we enjoy here today.  While the greater good is justification for sustainable behavior, there are other reasons striking closer to home for consumers using energy to power electronics and heat their homes.  For each individual player involved in the grand scheme of global consumption, there are personal reasons to get on board the eco-movement:  Money saving opportunities result from energy-conscious behavior.

Creating Heat Uses the Most Energy
Consumers with concern for the planet seek ways to lessen their own impacts on the Earth’s health.  Ecologically responsible behavior stems from being less wasteful and from taking strides toward reduced dependence on energy.  Modern lifestyles lean heavily on electronic devices and plug-in gadgets.  Despite the widespread use of tablets, personal computers, mobile phones, and other consumer electronics, these items are not the greatest energy offenders operating within your home.  Instead, it is the heating appliances operating within your residence, which call for the highest amounts of energy to function properly.  Cooking appliances, as well as those used to heat water and to provide heat to the entire household are prime targets for energy reduction strategies aimed at saving the planet, and keeping some cash in the pockets of energy-conscious home owners.

Break Heating Needs Into Zones
Because of the inconsistent way heat travels through large spaces, it can be difficult to maintain temperatures across wide open interior spaces.  The result is higher energy bills, because the boiler is fooled into thinking it needs to fire, when it actually does not.  In other words, momentary temperature reductions at the thermostat point cause the boiler to start making heat, even though other areas of the home, away from the thermostat are adequately warmed.  Whether your heating system relies on warmed air or circulated water to keep your home warm, it is possible to create a more efficient system by breaking your house into individual zones, to be heated independently.  Not only do isolated thermostats keep spaces more comfortable for occupants, but efficiency leads to money savings over time.

System Maintenance Ensures Proper Functioning
The hardware providing heat to your home is subject to wear and tear, like any other home appliance.  Outdated heating systems require more energy to operate, because they were manufactured before certain energy standards were established governing appliance performance.  Replacing your boiler and other heating system components lays the groundwork for ongoing savings, using less energy to provide the same levels of heat as your old unit. Sometimes it is cost effective to source funds externally for this work to make longer term savings.  Energy Star ratings help consumers identify the models with the highest performance evaluations using energy.  Filters and other replaceable parts should be serviced regularly, as well as contracting a professional cleaning and adjustment annually.  Thermostats themselves lose accuracy as they age, leading to imprecise control of the boiler’s operation.  Models ten years old or older should be summarily replaced, while more recent versions should have modern standards in place.

One recent development is the advent of precisely programmable thermostat controls, allowing users to enter multiple on/off times, and change
