How to Save Money On Hot Water

Heating the water in your home is no cheap task but it’s a necessary one. There’s no real way around avoiding hot water usage, however there are ways to make the whole process a lot more efficient and affordable.

With the price of electricity and fossil fuels from power companies going through the roof, learning how to make the most of what you’ve got and cutting the cost of your heating can be a great benefit. So, let’s take a closer look at how to heat hot water for less and save money on your hot water bills.

Boiler

We know from our work at www.bestathire.co.uk that most homes in the UK use a boiler to heat the water and though there are a variety of boilers on offer the combi boiler is becoming increasingly common. The alternative traditional boiler which provides hot water from a cylinder is less efficient and often requires the use of an electric immersion. This is a particularly costly form of heating water as it uses an element to heat water in a similar manner to a kettle. This is a very inefficient way to heat water and is extremely expensive. In essence, it should never be used unless you really need hot water in a rush and there are no other options.

However, if you have a home that uses electric storage then you will rely on the immersion in the cylinder to heat the water. It’s very important never to leave the immersion on as it will waste electricity and money.

How to Save on Hot Water

  • Firstly, use less water and you will save. Take shorter showers, avoid taking baths and set the washing machine and dishwasher at a lower temperature to cut down on the price of water and wasted heat.
  • Insulation is a great way to lower the cost of electricity as it lowers the incidence of heat loss. Adding an insulated jacket to your cylinder will lower the amount of heat lost through it and could save you a lot of money each year. If you can, it’s also a good idea to insulate the hot pipes that surround the area too as these also leak a notable amount of heat.
  • Ensuring you’ve the right control system for your heater can also save a lot of hassle and will prevent problems. Having the correct system ensures that it’s working properly and that you will be better able to control the hot water levels more accurately.
  • Switching fuel and the fuel provider can also save you a notable amount. For instance, gas is a lot lower in price than electricity. In addition, there can be a notable difference in the plans that heating companies offer and switching can be a good idea.
  • If you truly want to lower the cost then goi green. Installing items such as water pumps or solar panels can cut the price significantly and allow you to run often with no cost at all.

These tips will help you cut your heating costs and save money on heating your water.
