What’s an Environmental Consultant?
September 5th, 2013 by Andreas Xavier in Environmental. Topics: consultantEnvironmental Consultants provide expert advice to the government and private establishments on matters related to the environment. They play an important role in reducing the detrimental effects that these agencies could have on the environment.
These consultants address a variety of issues related to the environment, such as the assessment of land, air & water contamination, waste management issues, environmental impact assessments, environmental audits and environmental policy management issues.
A career in environmental consultancy starts with a sound education in the field of science. A degree in biology, chemistry, geology or environmental science would be ideal for this. In order to increase the communication skills of the person seeking to be an environmental consultant, a sound education in public relations or business communication would be essential.
The consultant should be able to express himself or herself clearly to the client. The consultant will also need to have very good public relation skills as most of the work will involve dealing with outside firms and organizations.
During the last year of the degree, the aspirant would need to be affiliated with an environmental consultancy firm for his or her internship. This will give the necessary experience and contacts that would be needed to find future employment. Organizing projects, assisting in writing & presenting environmental projects and laboratory research would be the major work of the aspirant during the internship.
The basic degree would allow you to find suitable employment in a consultancy firm. But, with the competitiveness in the market today, a masters degree could provide more opportunities and a higher salary than a basic degree. An additional 2-3 years would allow you to complete the masters in environmental subjects and also specialize in a specific type of environmental consultancy.
Professionals having qualifications in environmental subjects are employed in a wide range of activities related to the environment. Mostly in consultancy, water related projects and government roles: including local government and national regulatory organizations. The consultant will help his client: whether commercial or government, to develop effective strategies to mitigate the effects on current and future environmental damages.
He or she will also be responsible for enlightening the client on designing the environmental policies in line with the current environmental laws and regulations. Raising awareness of the client on sustainability and conservation with regards to environmental issues is another scope of an environmental consultant.
The day to day activities of an environmental consultant would vary due to the range of work covered in this subject. Identifying land, water and air related contamination issues by means of field work or desk related research work, is a major task. Also, identifying the impacts that the contaminated sources could have on the environment, is another important task of the consultant.
Conducting field surveys, collecting data, establishing a baseline condition for the levels of pollution & contamination, interpreting the collected data, are some of the most important day to day activities of an environmental consultant. The job of an environmental consultant is vital, in order to preserve the environment for our future generations.
