Some Quick Energy Saving Tips

August 30th, 2013 by Guest Blogger in Energy. Topics:

Saving energy not only does the environment the world of good it also helps to lighten the load on your wallet, as you can make massive savings per year by being a little more frugal with your energy in the home.

Here are some simple and effective ways to save energy and save yourself money in the long run;

Avoid Using Heating Unnecessarily

During the winter months, keeping your heating on constantly on a low temperature is a lot more energy efficient that having it running at full temperature for hours a day.

If you’re feeling a bit chilly but it’s not that cold outside, maybe consider wearing an extra layer or two instead of cranking your heating up. Even decreasing your thermostat by as little as 1 degree could save you up to £60 a year.

If you have a power shower, consider turning the water pressure down as you can get an awful lot of water wastage from having the pressure up too high. In some cases, power showers can use more water than a bath.

Do The Laundry More Efficiently

Save money by alternating your usual tumble dry for hanging your clothes outside on a suitable day.

Over 90% of your washing machine’s energy expenditure is spent heating the water, consider, even occasionally, washing your clothes in lower temperatures; 30-40c and enjoy a lower energy bill.

Save yourself time, instead of waiting around for clothes in the tumble dryer to be completely dry, take them out when they are still slightly damp, they will be a lot easier to iron.

Cook Economically

Avoid energy wastage by using the oven for just one small meal once a day as it uses up a lot of energy, consider using your oven for several meals a day and avoid using a big pan for a small meal on a small hob.

Letting your fridge become bare actually makes hard work for your fridge as your fridge and freezer have to work twice as hard which may seem hard to believe but keeping them fully stocked will actually use less energy.

When using the dishwasher, do not be tempted to put on a full load for a few items of cutlery; wash up instead. Try and limit your dishwasher cycles to big loads only and avoid pre-rinsing, this wastes a lot of water, instead, try scraping or wiping the plates before they go in the dishwasher.

Save Electricity

Stop leaving appliances that you are not using plugged in and on standby all day. Same goes for chargers, unless you are charging something at the time, unplug it.

Same goes for having lights on unnecessarily particularly when you are not in. If you are going to be away from your home for quite some time and are worried about security, consider getting a timer switch, this gives you the reassurance of lighting that will come on at certain times of the day or night to deter burglars without running up a huge energy bill at the end of it.
